How do you think the role of engineering managers will evolve? Do you see the role gradually disappearing?

I work in IT delivery, and this is something I’m watching closely. In my opinion, the interesting shift isn’t that engineering managers will disappear — it’s that the path into those roles is changing. AI is accelerating low-level coding, but senior engineers still need to prompt well, architect well, and validate the outputs. The challenge is that those senior people historically grew out of junior roles. If AI replaces the feeder layer, we create a future talent gap at the top. That’s the part I’m watching closely.

Congrats to the revised edition and I resonated strongly with all your take to the commonly asked AI questions. Your book was instrumental for my own leadership/managerial development back in the traditional corporate world. And now a highly recommended one for my clients who are facing transition or have become new managers. Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom!
